New laws governing pool safety in Cyprus
Cyprus has strict laws governing public swimming pool safety. The government takes pool safety very seriously and insists on organized access to public swimming pools. Recently the Cyprus government is looking into modifying the laws concerning swimming pools in residential developments which bring relief for property investors in Cyprus.
Under current legislation, communal swimming pools in private residential developments are considered to be public swimming pools. Regulation Number 368/96 states that all the swimming pool staffs have to get a health certificate and there should be trained supervisors during the operation and the use of the swimming pool with atleast one trained supervisor for small swimming pools.
With the emergence of a significant pool-owning community in Cyprus has become a recent phenomenon and things came to headlines some 18 months ago when the Larnaca officials declined to issue Certificates of Final Approval to those developments that did not have the required changing rooms and other facilities in place. The Cyprus Land & Building Developers Association has reached an agreement with the Cyprus government that communal swimming pools in private residential developments should not be classified as ‘public pools’.
The changes in pool safety regulations in Cyprus and increased hygiene and equipments in public and communal pools make property purchase more appealing. Property experts believe that the new law will be voted on by Parliament and the revised legislation will be in place by the end of the year.
